Molly Rose Lieberman’s paintings, sculptures and installations explore the possibilities for invention within existing structures. Pre-formats lay foundations for Lieberman to explore textures, strokes, colors, shapes, and energies that are built through unique sets of rules she crafts to move compositions forward. Sometimes she begins with previously used frames, utilized conventionally or as sites for transmutation. Material subjects like cotton paper containing her drawings from a travel experience or a photograph of a passerby’s spray-painted shoe become the bases of collaged underpaintings that define unique moments in Lieberman’s art-as-life practice. Throughout the course of making her work, moves hinge on potentials to solidify as legible signs, or continue on in states of abstract flow. Each work then becomes a capsule of manipulated time, space and place, responding to events or environments with inventions of poetic gesture.
