Maya Hewitt’s figurative works evolve from her direct and emotional approach to painting. Rough and tactile in her handling of paint, compositions begin as impulsive and gestural documentations of memories, snapshots, imagined scenarios and life around her as an artist and mother. Autobiographical moments of domesticity merge with images from pop culture and art history to channel dreamlike, nonlinear sequences that address a particular kind of love and conflict. Hewitt’s process is a fraught but playful push and pull of painted planes that gestate over time. Often working concurrently on multiple paintings alongside one another, addition and subtraction of acrylic, oil, watercolor washes, and charcoal layers allow for glimmers of buried underpaintings to peek through the surface, as if like portals to another world. Where motherhood has brought the artist a joyful reawakening to the simple beauty of ephemerality in everyday things, it has also provided its own tinge of unease and disturbance. These works speak of life and death, nature and chaos, loving relationships and the spiraling out of time.
