Kelsey Isaacs paints from photographs of scenes she has staged and spotlit. Synthetic fragments are assembled into compositions that are cropped and skewed into a painted language that oscillates between realism and abstraction. Whether by emphasizing the photographic process or caricaturing the painter’s hand, she meticulously builds an artificial reality only to reveal the apparatus through which it was made. Now incorporating video installations that expand this pursuit, her work explores choreographies of seeing, using the formal capacities of light, color, material, and finish to deconstruct and metonymize the stuff of spectacle.

Kelsey Isaacs (b. 1994, Los Angeles) lives and works in New York City.
